The profession of Speech and Language Therapy

Private Speech and Language Therapy Sessions for Children, Toddlers, and Young People in Lambeth and London

Speech and language therapy is more than just a label — it reflects a profession shaped by experience, and committed to helping others find their voice. Whether you are based in London or beyond, this title carries both meaning and responsibility.

As a private Speech and Language Therapist working with children and families in Lambeth and across London, I offer therapy that is grounded in linguistics and tailored to each child’s individual needs. Whether you’re seeking support for a toddler with delayed speech or a school-aged child struggling with reading, writing, or social communication, I provide focused, evidence-based intervention.

Speech and Language Therapist

SLT

The correct title of my profession, after some long debate over 30 years ago. What we call ourselves. What I am.

In clinical and educational settings throughout Lambeth and across London, the term Speech and Language Therapist is the most accurate. SLT is commonly used as a shorthand, while Speech Therapist still appears in everyday conversation. All refer to a role that continues to grow in depth and scope.

Speech and Language Therapy

The standardly accepted way of describing what speech and language therapists do — helping individuals communicate more effectively, whether through speech, language, reading, or writing.

Communicologist

Communicologist was one of the titles that was proposed and rejected. It now serves as a reminder of how much this field has evolved.

Speech Therapy

The older name for the profession before speech and language therapists started working with language — or more broadly, how words are put together to form meaning, both spoken and written.

A Profession Which Has Grown

Speech and language therapists now treat a much broader range of issues than they did once. Autism Spectrum Disorder is just one of these. Literacy challenges, speech unintelligibility, and social communication differences are others. These are areas I regularly support through private speech and language therapy sessions in my clinic for children from Lambeth and surrounding London boroughs.

My approach is linguistically informed and child-centred. I work to build confidence by focusing on what a child can already say, rather than drawing attention to what they cannot say. This helps ensure that sessions are engaging, supportive, and effective — particularly for children who may otherwise feel discouraged.

Big Questions

If you are worried about your child’s speech and / or language, you will doubtless have many big questions.

As a parent who once had those same concerns, I understand. Therapy is most effective when it focuses on what a child can say, not on what they can’t. That’s why I shape sessions to maximise success and confidence — especially for young children.

If you’re looking for private speech and language therapy in Lambeth or across London, and want an approach that is grounded in research yet deeply personal, I invite you to get in touch. From early language development to reading and writing support, tailored intervention can make a meaningful difference.
