Lambeth

South London

A legacy of speech and language therapy

My clinic is only a short walk from Lambeth town hall which is almost opposite Brixton tube station. Round the corner, there is also Brixton overground station.

For over 100 years this part of London has been a hub of artistic and creative life, and favoured by actors, artists, writers, musicians, working steam railway modelers. There are many murals, one opposite the the undrground station of David Bowie, who originated from Brixton. Brixton overground station has what are thought to be the only full size bronze statues of a living black person in Britain, one when she was a young woman and the other of her as she is now. You’ll find crocheted tops on the letter boxes, any number of clothes designers, music studios, cultural landmarks right on the doorstep. The recently restored Brixton Windmill is round the corner from my clinic.

By coincidence, the world’s first speech and language therapy clinic was started by one who could reasonably be described as the world’s first full time speech and language therapist, John Thelwall, 200 years ago, only a short walk away from my clinic in what he jokingly called ‘North Brixton Cottage’. (It now houses fourteen flats). The terms speech and language therapy and speech and language therapist did not then exist.

It is easy to get to my clinic. There are connections from all over London by nine buses and by underground, and from all over the South east from the overground to Brixton, and nearby Herne Hill, Streatham Hill, Clapham Junction, Victoria or Waterloo. There is also metered parking outside.

Easy to reach from across London

My clinic is well connected:

  • Brixton underground (at the end of the Victoria underground line);
  • Brixton overground;
  • Local trains from Herne Hill, Streatham Hill, Clapham Junction, Victoria and Waterloo;
  • Nine bus routes;
  • Metered parking outside.
